Yes, it is your choice to learn a sign language, but it should be heartfelt responsibility to help the hearing disabled ones cope better with life with a sincere effort to understand them better. I personally find online dictionaries with videos a lot more helpful, as well as having the MobileSign 2 app on my iPod. Even though similarities between different sign languages can be noticed, Sign Languages are not universal , they vary region to region and culture to culture.

You can learn BSL easily with conscious effort and time but to be a professional, you have to train and practice on another level to obtain the qualifications. It would benefit greatly from better descriptions, these don't need to be complicated but just a note to guide you on how to use your hands would make this book infinitely more useful. It's definitely not a level 1 textbook though; while there is a lot of overlap, there are some signs here that aren't part of that course and some level 1 signs that are left out of this book. Putting aside the unfortunate provenance of the word " dummy", this book was good, but not brilliant. There are different movement or gestures used for different alphabet, these manual alphabets play an important role in every sign language.
