About this deal

You could breeze through it, you could let it marinate, or you could reread it twice in one sitting. But when I closed the last page of the book I had the distinct feeling that I ought to start the book over for fear of what I didn’t grasp in her writing the first time around. While some stories appear whimsical and read like exercises, and others muse at length and almost absent-mindedly, almost abstractly, on habit and motive, or something that happened, others have an exquisite sharpness, the fruit of a most original and daring mind. I will surpass myself in waves, ah, Lord, and may everything come and fall upon me, even the incomprehension of myself at certain white moments because all I have to do is comply with myself and then nothing will block my path until death-without-fear, from any struggle or rest I will rise up as strong and beautiful as a young horse. Both the character description and the philosophical musing that you mention are also reasons that I think I will like this book.

Criticii văd în proza ei o ilustrare a modernismului și o pun în descendența lui James Joyce și a Virginiei Woolf, autori pe care Lispector încă nu-i citise. As I devoured the chapters the author was typing, it slowly dawned on me that this was an extraordinary literary revelation,” Barbosa said. Born to a Jewish family in Podolia in Western Ukraine, she was brought to Brazil as an infant, amidst the disasters engulfing her native land following the First World War. The more we read about Joana, the more we realize that like day and night, and brightness and darkness, she is full of contradictions and oppositions: She was sadly a happy woman. Just a goddess giving birth to a first child feeling vulnerable and inexperienced, and destined to make mistakes and lose control when the child grows up and claims an independent life.Sometimes, however, perhaps due to the nature of what she said, no bridge was created between them, and on the contrary an interval was born. There’s more to wonder at – looking at it compared to other books published the same year, or perhaps within the context of who she had been reading (do we know? Narrative epiphanies and interior monologue frame the life of Joana, from her middle-class childhood through her unhappy marriage and its dissolution to transcendence, when she proclaims: I shall arise as strong and comely as a young colt.

Even with her eyes closed she felt she felt that on the beach the waves were sucked back by the sea quickly, quickly, also with closed eyelids. The book’s title and epigraph come from James Joyce’s novel, Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man, but Lispector only discovered Joyce once she had finished writing Near. I have another Lispector, The Hour of the Star, but I might leave it for a few months just to put a bit of space between the two.
