Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 - PS5
About this deal
Sadly, tweaking the resolution like this causes the HUD overlay to break, alongside post-effects like blur.
However anti-aliasing and texture filtering are missing in MGS2 on Switch - and are lacking on Series X as well.Ainu20 I would not care about how a game is packaged, digitally or otherwise, so long as the game itself is good. The original 1998 Metal Gear Solid plays via emulation in the Master Collection release, with the same 240p resolution and 30fps cap. It's worth stressing that the best way to play this is in selecting the English US version from the menus, which gets you a higher max frame-rate than the default English UK option.
I have a Japanese PS3 that launched in 2006, and I can already play the PS1, PS2 and PS3 versions where applicable, and this machine has been able to do that for the PS1 and PS2 versions since launch. Which is what the release was originally intended to be, as a result they took the platinum trophy away from the ps5 version of lost legacy. Looks like the score is for the games themselves and not the collection which looks like a hot mess. the review itself was very poorly constructed and focused more on the presentation of the games in the menu than the games themselves!Looking at Switch too, it's a shame 30fps is enforced for these PS2 classics with frame-rate drops below this target as well. Sadly the 30fps cap isn't even well-implemented with uneven frame pacing, creating juddery movement and drops below 30fps. The trip down memory lane is a reminder of why the three titles are a lock in any top 50 list of the greatest games ever made, but the digital packaging that brings them back can leave much to be desired.
In my opinion, when it comes to releases of old games the score should reflect the value of collection rather than the games itself; does it do enough to polish and modernise the games? In MGS2 we get lurches into the low 20s on first meeting Fortune, for example, and 18fps in long shots of the oil rig. It's a bizarre situation on Series X as well, given the Master Collection produces a worse image than what we already had in the Xbox 360 HD Collection, running in back-compat on Series X.Even a native 1080p or 4K version of the game would have been a hugely welcome extra, and looking at PS1 emulators on PC like Duckstation, forcing higher resolutions allows for surprisingly good results. Each main title in the line-up will also include an exclusive digital Screenplay Book and Master Book that details the story and characters in that game. Honestly I'm just really happy to have a really good selection of MGS games all in one place available on the latest console. It's fine for jumping in and out of one specific title, but you've got to play a guessing game to locate the extra content.
