Easily understood for someone who didn't like maths at school and has to now teach it (and it's my favourite subject to teach! The book is written in the accessible and engaging style we have come to expect from Derek Haylock, and is informed by his wealth of experience. In the chapter ‘Written methods for Multiplication and Division’ the concepts behind the methods are explained clearly and thoroughly.

Self-assessment questions help check your understanding and provide immediate feedback to see how well you have done. I like to recommend this for this group to help them with mathematics pedagogy in training and beyond.Haylock and Manning's latest edition of this publication is still not improved enough in the numeracy section for me to recommend this to students. School based trainee teachers do not have many opportunities to look for supportive reading materials for their career. As part of my PGCE I purchased many books - this one being 1 of 3 that I actually use for my teaching. Of particular use are the ‘teaching points’ sections and links to video explanations and further practice.
