About this deal

I agree there really wouldn't be much of a demand for the edited Funimation dub post- Ginyu Assault. It also means the series will cost you like less then 1/10th new what the dragon boxes would cost you used. Contains Dragon Ball Z: Broly - Second Coming, Dragon Ball Z: Bio-Broly, Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn, and Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon. For Dragon Ball Z, they feature an anamorphic widescreen (16:9) transfer from original Japanese film print, a revised English audio track, original English and Japanese audio tracks, plus many other special features.

This allegedly helped to eliminate some of the grain and glue on the top and bottom of the picture and added more image to the left and right than any previous standard definition transfer, but also removed footage from the vertical aspect. They offered me a Promotion Code as a form of Compensation which I took as this will be so long to resolve. Certain items can take longer to source than the estimated week, particularly during busy trading periods and may take longer to arrive at our warehouse. Though it's highly likely that the lines were recorded in 2001, just like all the other lines that aren't redubbed due to the voices themselves being not really different. Also consider the fact that they were scanned on an ancient scanner from 1996 (a Spirit Datacine) which further magnified the print limitations (the Datacines had sharpening on by default, iirc, so unless the operator knew about that and changed the settings, even before restoration work was done it’s less than ideal). Each disk has annoying ads that Autoplay on loading, but they can be easily skipped with the menu button on my remote, so I don't care. There's no episode guide, they don't always close securely, and they have those nasty plastic disc holders that tear discs up.

Also, unlike the Season 2 set, the lack of redubbing for Goku in Season 3 was not poorly received as by this point in the original dub, Sean Schemmel's voice for Goku had developed more. Instead they spent money on adding DNR on top of Franko's beautiful transfer and wasted their time cropping the image (which anyone who wanted could have just used the Zoom feature on their TV remote anyway). Also, the pitch of the aliens in Vegeta's scenes are the original recorded lines unedited while the original dub had high pitch voices. For instance, Fighter 69 from the Tournament Saga had his voice pitched down in the original release, whereas here it is kept at its original pitch. Portions of her work as 2nd form Frieza are redubbed as well as redubbing one line for 3rd form Frieza in Episode 82, the line " Oh Piccolo, it's time for school!Hero in the Shadows', 'Krillin's Offensive', 'Mercy', 'Picking Up the Pieces', 'Plans for Departure', 'Nursing Wounds' and 'Friends Or Foes? The Dragon Boxes have their own color flaws of course, but they retain a certain level of brightness and saturation that feels right, which is more appealing to me than having "accurate" colors in a duller spectrum. The scene where Bulma escapes from the cave to steal the Dragon Balls was completely redubbed, possibly owing to the master recordings being lost or too damaged to use.

One of Krillin's lines in the aforementioned episode has a different take used as is one of Gohan's. Christopher Sabat redubs portions of his work as Kami and replaces Chris Forbis for his appearances in Episodes 76-77.The separation between the series is also significant as the latter series takes on a more dramatic and serious tone. In episode 86, he redubs most of his work as Bardock in the Frieza flashback (except for when he says, "No way! The Season 3 set, so far, has received a much better reception from fans, mainly due to how FUNimation kept the colors the same, although they were brightened. Incredible how they manage to avoid doing a perfect remaster that respects the aspect ratio, the details, the story etc. When Porunga is summoned in West City, the woman who freaks out seeing him is redubbed by Carrie Savage in place of a pitched-up Cynthia Cranz.

Another note is that in the episodes " Memories of Gohan", " Save the World", " Goku's Decision", and " One More Wish", Mark Britten's voice for Ox-King is left intact. At times, I thought they were severely cropped as the top of the head was missing etc but looking at the original the head is cropped there too. Moori's voice is still Mark Britten when Guru dies again and during his stay at Capsule Corporation. Laura Bailey redubs Ceyli Delgadillo for Dende's scream during Gohan's flashback in the aforementioned episode. I do wish we could've gotten them in their entirety, and they are considerably preferable to what we keep getting stuck with, but I can't see them becoming a "definitive" version with these kinds of problems. In a report, ICv2 reported that Dragon Ball Z continues to remain the number one anime property, beating out other well-known anime Pokémon and Naruto. Sabat redubs his performance as Zarbon in episode 78 and also gets an extra line " Well, I suppose you know best. Michael Tatum, Mustard went from Chuck Huber to Brandon Potter, and Maron went from Daphne Gere to Leah Clark respectively). Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more. In that respect this could be a cheaper way of owning the series for US and Canadian fans who just want to have the show in 4:3, and can't afford to import the Manga UK editions, which is something at least.
