About this deal

I expected something good, but it felt really lackluster and it may have been because of my expectations. In the beginning you can understand her frustrations in being forced to leave her Miami life and her cherished family bakery.

My eyes struggle to adjust, trading palm trees and peach stucco for weathered brick and steepled churches—just like the tiny stone parish next door. But it’s hard not to feel that two of Lila’s ‘traumas’ (a breakup and a friend not joining her for college) are pretty run-of-the-mill for teens. It’s full of sweetness (with not too much sugar), a top notch romantic relationship, letting go friendships, but forming new ones, and tons of cooking and baking. After the loss of her grandmother, Lila leaves her life at Abuela’s Cuban bakery in Miami to spend the summer cooking at her aunt’s inn in Winchester. It'd sad because this was an anticipated read for me and it had very positive reviews during the book tour I saw on Instagram.

That doesn’t mean Lila can’t be devastated by them – but if she is feeling them to the point of self-harm, she needs a therapist, instead of – or at least in addition to – a trip to England. I think I need to make time for it sooner rather than later (but when I have a chance to do some baking first, it sounds like). No offence but why on earth would you chose a narrator for a book set in England who’s attempt at an English accent literally made me pull a face like i was licking a lemon! Though the ingredients may vary from family to family, the goal is always the same: suffer heartbreak and your family will fix you. But overall, what makes this novel such a thoughtful read is how its a story about overcoming grief and figuring out the next step. But it doesn’t stop one half of me from wanting to beat my fists against the wall, screaming the feral sounds I’ve had echoing in my mind all day. Soon a new future is beginning to form in Lila's mind-one that would mean leaving everything she ever planned behind.
