Alessi PSJS Juicy Salif Citrus Juicer, Aluminium, Mirror Polished
About this deal
With its collaborations with visionary designers, meticulous craftsmanship, and commitment to sustainability, Alessi continues to captivate design enthusiasts and redefine the way we perceive everyday objects. But the device is not easy to use, and its polished aluminum finish is vulnerable to corrosion and producing an unpleasant taste, as conceded in its official instructions. In our Orientations series, members of the LGBTQIA+ community explore an object that resonates with their identity.

Starck became one of the most famous designers of that time and designed everything from apartment blocks, homes, domestic products and hotels. Upon further inspection, I learnt that the Juicy Salif lemon squeezer is, in fact, one of Philippe Starck’s most influential designs and is still sold to this day. The designer sketched the basic idea for the press on a napkin, which Alessi finally put into practice in 1990. Alberto Alessi was surprised and intrigued when he received the design for this lemon juicer from Philippe Starck. In a publication released by Alessi the 25th anniversary of the design, Philippe Starck states that the original intent of the product was not to actually be functional but to spark conversation.
The company specialises in the design and production of authentic Italian-inspired kitchenware, tableware, cookware, glassware and home decorations.Celebrated by some and criticised by others the Juicy Salif certainly serves its purpose as a tool that's "not meant to squeeze lemons, but meant to start conversations" which is what Starck supposedly described it as. I encountered said lemon squeezer on my very first day working with the collection and its design stuck with me, and I could not stop thinking about it.
One of the hallmarks of Alessi's design philosophy is its attention to detail and the use of high-quality materials.A design classic by Philippe Starck straight from the 90s - the landed spaceship; more a sculpture than a lemon juicer. Made from a mirror polished and durable aluminium, its long, spider-like legs are tall enough to fit your glass underneath - ready to collect your lemon, orange or lime juice.
